RS6 Catch Can

RS6 Catch Can

After rooting through some of the older sets of pictures in iPhoto, we came across some pictures that we took within the last week or so of the RS6. Since we haven’t provided an update on the RS6 for a while, we realized that our newest addition to its engine bay ended up being passed over. So, without further ado, here’s a gander at our homemade oil catch can. It’s the perfect, shiny accompaniment for an already pretty flashy engine bay:

For those not in the know, an oil catch can is used in forced induction and race applications to prevent oil vapors from the crankcase from being routed through the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve and into the intake. In these sort of engine applications, blowby (excess air and fuel mixture) seeps past the piston rings and enters the crankcase. The PCV valve is meant to put that excess blowby back into the intake for combustion, but it will mix with the oil vapor in the crankcase, and oil doesn’t combust in the cylinder very well. Therefore, the catch can is put in place to trap the oil and prevent it from reaching the intake. It’s quite a useful thing to have, when it comes down to it, especially when boost is involved.
